Research Update 2

Research Question: What were the Ancient Olympic Games and why did they become so popular?

The ancient Olympic games differ greatly from the Olympic games we all know and love. The games were more about power and strength. The events were not ball games but track and field events. The games started as a simple festival in Olympia as a way to honor the Greek god Zeus. They were one of the four larger festivals in Greece. They would become the most well-known athlete competition in all of the Greek-speaking world.
Once games were opened up to anyone who spoke Greece its popularity skyrocketed. The victors of the games were never rewarded by the games with anything more than an olive wreath and honor. The victors received honor and glory and at the time was the greatest prize available. However, when the victors went home their city-state might have a prize for them. In Athens, a victor of the games could be given fourteen years worth of wages for labor for winning the games.
